June 1, 2011 is National Running Day. This special occasion takes me back to the day that running forever changed my life. On October 18, 2009, I completed my first half marathon in San Francisco (yes, hills included!) with a time of 1:48:30.
I was exhausted for the first 2-3 miles. My grit and a great playlist pushed me onwards. Then, my body fell into a rhythmic groove for the next 8 miles. With each stride, I grew more confident in my training and preparation. During miles 10-11, I played counting games (my strides, the number of other runners around me, calories in foods!) to keep my mind off my aches and fatigue. As I approached the finish, a flood of emotion overwhelmed me. The feeling was unreal—it was an accomplishment like no other.
I was never a runner prior to training for my first half marathon. In fact, in high school, I barely ran a mile in less than 12 minutes. The idea of Sarah Kay Hoffman (then Sarah Kay Jewison!) running was actually comical to my friends. So, when I persisted and got fairly fast, it was a shock to them—and a blessing for me!
Running gives me mind, body, and spiritual confidence. It helps me dig deep to the core of my athletic capability and really push myself. Thanks to running, I feel fortunate to be healthy and vibrant! Check out the races and events I’ve completed. Now it’s your turn. Lace up your sneakers and celebrate National Running Day!
